Valuable Lessons to Teach Girls
As a therapist, I have seen a variety of people throughout my tenure. I’ve seen teenage girls the most frequently. Since I used to be a teenage girl myself, I am passionate about helping these young women navigate the world and bettering their mental health. Even though the world might be slightly different from when I was when I was a teenager, there are themes that remain the same. In this blog, I will explore some of the main lessons that are important for young girls to learn, absorb, and implement into their lives as they mature into adulthood.
Inner vs Outer Beauty
In the age of social media, it is very easy for young girls to get lost in the pressures and values of this world. Women tend to find their worth from their external beauty instead of their internal beauty. Although it is important to take care of yourself and your physical appearance, it is certainly not the most important thing about girls. Character is what matters in life and everyone, especially young girls, need to know this truth.
Boundaries
Boundaries are important for every person to know, teenager and adult alike. Especially with young girls, it is important that they understand what they are responsible for versus what they’re not responsible for. Many young girls get caught up in the drama of life, especially with their friends. It is important that they understand that they are not responsible for anyone else’s actions or feelings other than their own. Someone can still be a good friend without the need to take on every feeling that their friend may have.
Benefits of Dreaming
Creating a vision board can be so helpful for girls to dream about their future. They can plan for what they want to create for their lives. These should be images that inspire the girls toward their goals for what they want for their future. If someone doesn’t know what they are aiming for, it can be easy to get lost in the struggles that are normal to life. It is good to dream and to have goals for the future!
Starting October 21st, Joy McGowan and I are leading a group for girls ages 11-14. These lessons are so valuable for young girls to understand that it is worth hosting a group about them. Parents have the most influence over their children’s lives, but it is always helpful to have reinforcement from other stable adults too! We hope that you would consider having your daughter, niece, granddaughter, loved one, etc. to join our group. We would love to have her : )
