Can Love Last A Lifetime?
At 71 years of age, George experienced a transformation. You see, all his life he believed he wasn’t wanted. There were some good reasons for that. His biological mother gave him up for adoption. His adoptive mother threatened to return him to the orphanage. Some of his school teachers significantly mistreated him. And so he lived his life assuming that others didn’t want him – even his wife.
A belief like “I’m not wanted” doesn’t stay quiet—it shapes what you do. When you carry that belief, you chase acceptance, yet you never fully believe anyone truly wants you. George made people laugh and he was good at it. But no matter how many people loved George, he never felt truly loved – not even by his wife.
In a life-changing experience, George realized that he had been protecting himself from his wife’s rejection, something he always assumed would happen. But in protecting himself, George had not fully loved his wife or accepted her love for more than 50 years. Once George didn’t have to protect himself from being rejected, things were different. He became able to express and receive love – especially from his wife. Which made the joy so much greater when the walls finally came down.
Was it worth it? All the years of struggle, rejection, and feeling unseen led me to fight to love George. His wife (also in her 70s) described her current life as “blessing upon blessing.” She said, “Some people are called to minister to many people. I was called to minister to one.”
Are you the kind of person that wants to stay connected to the one you love?
