| Do this One Thing to Feel Less Stress….. Stop reading other people’s minds. Sounds easy enough, but it happens all the time. We are always making sense of things – trying to guess what other people are thinking, feeling, and intending. Even when driving, we do our best to figure out, “Is that person going to yield?!?” The tendency to mind-read is especially true when there is missing information. When we don’t know something, we tend to fill in the gap with negative information. He doesn’t care. She doesn’t like me.They don’t understand. We rarely default to positive in the absence of information. When you don’t get a text response from someone, have you ever explained it by saying: My boss has utter faith in my work. My dad is super proud of me. My kids love spending time with me. Right. When we don’t know, we tend to go dark. More than that, we almost always imagine others’ feelings, thoughts, and intentions as more negative than reality. This leads us to feel worse than we need to. Do this one thing to feel less stress: stop thinking you know what other people are thinking, feeling, or intending. If you think you know, you are probably wrong. Other options:Ask them. (Ridiculous, I know. But give it a shot.)Figure out what you are feeling – then address it.Distract yourself.Catch yourself. Cut it out. Feel less stress. PS – This is a tough challenge if you are especially empathic. If you have said the phrase, “I’m an empath,” Be careful with that natural ability you have to experience others’ feelings.
